Writing
Max is fascinated by the impact writing has on how we understand music and our communities. Through the WRGW blog, he’s focused on covering independent art, publishing reviews and artist interviews as well as creating the radio station’s zine which was distributed for free across DC. His interest in local music and zines was further explored in his senior thesis on the DC punk scene.
Write the Power
Write the Power is Max’s American Studies senior thesis. Informed by Michel Foucault’s study of discourses, the paper is an analysis of fanzines from Washington DC’s historic punk scene. He discusses zines’ significance in shaping harDCore community politics and organizing strategies from the late 1970s on, arguing that, beyond being a genre of music, “punk” must be understood as a literary movement.
